You cannot use your WordPress without plugins. I mean you can use WordPress, but without plugins, WordPress is itself incomplete. Plugins make WordPress a complete CMS. Plugins extend the functionality, gives your WordPress flexibility to do much more things. It makes it more professional, allows you to have the complete control of your WordPress site. But how to install a WordPress plugin the easy way?
Normally, a WordPress installation comes with few default plugins.
Now, there are thousands and thousands of plugins available, free and premium. One major source to look for plugins is WordPress Plugins Repository.
When you install a new WordPress, it gives you two default plugins to start with, Akismet & Hello Dolly.
If you have just started a new blog, you must have figured out by now what is the purpose of your blog, who will be your audience and other things which define the objective of your blog.
By defining these things, there are various plugins which then can be installed and implemented accordingly. I will be talking about on how to install a WordPress plugin in this post which should help the new bloggers.
Although there are multiple ways to install a WordPress plugin, but I will talk about the easiest way for new bloggers, via WordPress Dashboard.
Let’s start the process of installing a plugin.
When you sign into your WordPress Dashboard, you will notice Plugins option on the left menu bar. Plugins option shows us 3 more sub-menu items.
- Installed Plugins
- Add New
For now, when you click on Plugins or Installed Plugins option, it will take you to the next screen where it displays the currently installed plugins.
INSTALLED PLUGINS LIST
This page gives us the list view of installed plugins in our WordPress site. From here, you can add new plugins, activate them, deactivate them, configure them with their settings, or delete them.
If there is a new update available for a plugin, you can update from here.
ADD NEW PLUGIN
You have two options to click on to add a new plugin.
When you click on ‘Add New’ option, the next screen shows you the list of plugins waiting to be installed in your WordPress installation.
If you know which plugin you are looking for you can search for it. WordPress offers real-time search functionality so you won’t face any problem.
But as you open this page, it gives you the list of some of the featured and popular WordPress plugins which are hugely used.
In this example, it shows us JetPack by WordPress.com plugin under Featured section. And right next to the plugin you will see the ‘Install Now’ button, which will install the plugin instantly with the click of your mouse button.
Once the plugin is installed, it needs to be activated to be functional. If you have an old plugin inactive, deactivated or installed a new plugin, you will have an ‘Activate’ button.
So go ahead and click on ‘Activate’ button to start using the plugin.
PLUGIN SETTINGS & CONFIGURATION
Clicking on ‘Activate’ button will redirect you to the Installed Plugins page which shows you the list of all plugins.
So, finally, your new plugin is now activated to be used.
Most of the plugins come up with some sort of settings to be customized as per different site needs.
Here, we installed Jetpack plugin which shows us Settings option under its name. That means it does have some sort of settings to be configured. Now when I click on that, it brings me the plugin configuration page.
In this example, there are few things which I wouldn’t use on my blog. For example, I don’t think that I will use Infinite Scroll option on my blog, but maybe you might want to use it on yours.
These settings need to be adjusted as per your requirement.
So play with it, and always use safe and secure plugins from trusted developers.
I will be discussing more on how to install a WordPress plugin through some other ways in my future post.
Be right back.
